Residential Trips and Educational Visits

Extending educational opportunities beyond the classroom has been a hallmark of Langdale School and Nursery since it first opened in 1920, and our sea-front location on Blackpool’s North Shore continues to offer fantastic opportunities to put life into learning.

With the added benefit of mini-bus transport available at all times, the staff are able to take advantage of opportunities whenever they occur, and Langdale children consider themselves to be very well-travelled indeed!

Educational Visits

Currently, the children in Key Stage 1 and 2 undertake a minimum of one educational visit every half term, visiting places such as the Manchester Museum, Blackpool Zoo, the Wyre Estuary Country Park, Styal Mill, Fleetwood Museum and The Grundy Art Gallery.  For our Nursery children, the aim is a minimum of one educational visit per term. As the topics change each year as part of the school’s rolling programme, so do the venues  – and Lancashire and its surrounds certainly has a lot on offer to explore.

Both the Foundation Stage Curriculum and the National Curriculum for England recognise the value and enjoyment that is generated as a result of well-planned visits, as well as the significant benefits to learning that such visits engender. These benefits include:

  •  being able to apply a different range of skills than those used in the classroom
  • enabling, supporting and complementing the work of the National Curriculum, experimental (first hand) and memorable learning
  • assessing and managing risks (safety)
  • developing latent talents, abilities and interests, which can be motivational and have lifelong relevance.

Residential Visits

For children in Key Stage 2, it is also the aim of the school for each child to have the opportunity to take part in a residential visit on an annual basis. Residential visits have the potential to break down peer barriers, encourage success in entirely unexpected fields and develop greater independence and self-confidence. And they’re also a great deal of fun!  Langdale children have, in the past, enjoyed residential visits at several different regional outdoor pursuit centres and have found themselves becoming passionate about such diverse activities as canoeing, archery, abseiling, spelunking and rock-climbing. And who knows, perhaps a future Olympic medallist is now in the making as a result of a residential experience that started right here at Langdale...
